Community of “Wagenburg Lohmühle” in Berlin

The Wagenburg Lohmühle is a self-managed community in Berlin, where residents live in wagons and mobile homes, promoting a sustainable and collaborative lifestyle. This space fosters values of cooperation, creativity, and environmental respect, serving as a hub for artistic and cultural projects. It stands as a symbol of resistance to traditional urban dynamics, offering an alternative model of communal living in the city.

The Individuals of the Threshold are transformers, creators, and dwellers of in-between spaces. Their movements and decisions not only transform the space they inhabit but also explore the virtuality of the sides they connect. This concept draws inspiration from the community of “Wagenburg Lohmühle” in Alt-Treptow, Berlin, located in the former boundary between East and West Berlin, an area that also divides the Kreuzberg and Alt-Treptow neighborhoods. They represent a living example of liminality by questioning the prevailing social and urban norms of organization in the city.

The project Die Grenzbewohner*in emerges from an exploration of the physical border surrounding the space inhabited by this community. Through the collection of objects discarded along the boundaries of their environment—from wood and toys to alarms and clothing—a narrative is constructed that invites the viewer to reflect on the meanings of this threshold. This speculative space, always situated between two confronting areas, becomes a starting point for exploring coexistence and resistance in intermediate territories.

The work was exhibited at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) gallery, where the collected objects were integrated with projections of scanned images and videos from the community’s perimeter, creating an immersive multimedia installation. The visual and auditory experience invited the audience to immerse themselves in the essence of thresholds, extending the concept of painting into new media and formats. This approach aims to visualize these transitional and intermediate spaces, which are an essential part of counter-spaces to oppressive or established systems.

The concept of Individuals of the Threshold highlights not only the transformative power of art in spaces of resistance but also challenges traditional notions of belonging and boundaries. It is a tribute to those who inhabit and redefine the margins, questioning and expanding the limits of what is possible.
